Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. It involves the injection of a sclerosing agent directly into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and eventually fade away. Sclerotherapy is a commonly performed and effective treatment option for addressing these cosmetic and sometimes symptomatic vein issues. In this article, we will provide an overview of the sclerotherapy procedure.

Dr. Sabry can help you address your specific issue.

Sclerotherapy Procedures

There are several Sclerotherapy Procedures. These are:

  1. Consultation and Evaluation: Before undergoing sclerotherapy, a consultation with a healthcare professional, often a dermatologist or vascular specialist, is conducted. During this evaluation, the healthcare provider will assess the veins, discuss the patient’s medical history, and determine the suitability of sclerotherapy as a treatment option.
  2. Preparation: Sclerotherapy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and special preparation is not usually required. However, the patient may be advised to avoid applying lotions or oils to the legs before the procedure.
  3. Injection Technique: The patient is positioned comfortably, and the areas to be treated are cleansed. A fine needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the affected veins. The solution irritates the inner lining of the veins, causing them to collapse and stick together.
  4. Compression: Following the injection, the healthcare provider may apply compression to the treated veins. This can be achieved through the use of compression stockings, compression bandages, or adhesive tape. Compression helps to promote the closure of the treated veins and reduces the risk of complications.
  5. Multiple Injections: Sclerotherapy often involves multiple injections in a single session. The number of injections required depends on the number and size of the treated veins. The healthcare provider will determine the appropriate number of injections based on the specific needs of the patient.
  6. Post-procedure Care: After the sclerotherapy session, patients are typically advised to walk and engage in light activities to promote circulation. Strenuous exercise and prolonged sitting or standing should be avoided for a few days. Patients may also be instructed to wear compression stockings or bandages for a specified period to aid in healing and maximize treatment effectiveness.
  7. Results and Follow-up: Over time, the treated veins collapse and are gradually reabsorbed by the body. The fading of the veins may take a few weeks to months, and multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve desired results, especially for larger veins or extensive areas of treatment. Follow-up appointments with the healthcare provider are scheduled to assess the progress and determine if additional sessions are required.
  8. Potential Side Effects: Sclerotherapy is generally considered safe, but there are some potential side effects and complications. These can include temporary discomfort at the injection site, bruising, skin discoloration, itching, or the formation of small blood clots. Serious complications such as allergic reactions, skin ulceration, or infection are rare but can occur.
