What Is a Body Lift?

A body lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin from the body, often including the abdomen, flanks, back, buttocks, and thighs. During this operation, Dr. Sabry lifts the sagging skin off, tightens all the slack muscles, and recreates new body contours. This procedure is especially popular among patients who have experienced significant weight loss and have excess loose or sagging skin that cannot be improved with exercise.
It is not a substitute for weight loss surgery but can significantly enhance the results of previous weight loss efforts. The procedure enhances comfort, mobility, and body confidence and reduces irritation caused by redundant skin folds. It may be performed as a lower body lift (belt lipectomy), upper body lift, or both together for total transformation, as per the case.

Body Lift Techniques

At Murray Hill Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sabry offers different body lift surgeries based on the desired outcome, general health, and areas to be treated. Our surgeon adopts a unique strategy for every patient in order to maximize results while minimizing evidence of the procedure.

Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy)

This technique involves an incision that encircles the waist. Dr. Sabry removes and tightens loose skin from the abdomen, hips, flanks, outer thighs, and buttocks. The underlying tissues are then lifted and repositioned to produce a more defined contour. This operation is ideal for those with sagging mid and lower body skin.
This lift addresses the upper back skin looseness. Incisions are placed on the upper back to remove rolls of excess tissue and tighten the area. This is usually paired with arm lifts or breast surgery to complete the upper body transformation.
This procedure, which is usually part of a lower body lift, involves lifting and shaping the buttocks through the elimination of extra skin and moving tissue to the proper place. It improves the projection while at the same time making the patient appear young and with an enhanced tone.

Body Lift Preparation & Consultation

Initial Consultation

During a body lift consultation with Dr. M. Zakir Sabry, he will answer patients’ questions about the procedure and discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.
During the consultation, Dr. Sabry will do a complete medical history and physical exam, including weight, to determine whether a patient is a candidate for a body lift. He will examine the patient’s abdomen and lower body, the quality of their skin, the location of any existing scars, and the amount and location of any excess skin and fat.
He will discuss the patient’s motivations, the possible risks and complications, and realistic expectations. Once a patient and the surgeon have a clear understanding of the risks and potential outcomes, Dr. Sabry will devise a specific procedure plan that is right for them and that they agree on. If a patient is a smoker, they will be asked to quit smoking for 6-8 weeks prior to your procedure.

As a patient approaches the date of the surgery, they will have a comprehensive preoperative visit in our office approximately two weeks before surgery. A complete list of “dos and don’ts” will be reviewed, as well as the pre and post-operative instructions, and any questions that remain will be answered. A patient will be directed to avoid anything with a blood-thinning effect (aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, etc.) for two weeks before surgery. They will be asked to minimize alcohol intake. Essential blood work for preoperative testing will be ordered.

Body Lift Procedure Explained

Marking and Anesthesia:

Dr. Sabry meticulously marks the areas to be treated on the procedure day. Such areas may involve the lower abdomen, buttocks, and outer thighs. Subsequently, the patient is put under general anesthesia by our anesthesiologist for comfort and a painless operating experience.
Next, our surgeon makes a circumferential incision around the waistline or slightly lower, based on the amount and distribution of the excess skin. This allows him to remove an apron of sagging skin and fat from the abdomen and the back. He tightens the abdominal muscles, repositions the belly button if necessary, and re-drapes the abdominal skin. Deep supporting sutures are placed into the tissue to reinforce new contours. He may also perform liposuction to add shape to the waist and flanks.
Once the desired shape is achieved, Dr. Sabry closes the incisions with sutures. Small drainage tubes are inserted to prevent fluid buildup and are typically left in place for a couple of days. Occasionally, the whole body contouring scheme is divided into multiple stages over a span of time, with Dr. Sabry recommending the safest and most effective method depending on the patient’s individual needs.

Recovery After a Body Lift

Immediate Recovery

Patients usually spend a few hours in the hospital following a body lift surgery for a close evaluation of their initial recovery by Dr. Sabry and our team. The bandages are taken off approximately two days post-operation. At this point, patients could have some discomfort, but it will most likely disappear within one or two weeks. For this period, Dr. Sabry will prescribe pain medicine to ensure comfort.
In order to reduce swelling and help the body take its new shape, patients must wear compression garments for a number of weeks. Dr. Sabry may recommend a special post-operative diet, depending on the kind of surgery. Within a week or two, patients typically start moving again after drainage removal. Wound healing continues gradually, and while minor wound separations may occur, they rarely require additional surgery.
Patients are advised to stay out of work for a period of two to three weeks and also not to engage in normal physical activities for at most six weeks. It is safe to start light exercises at approximately eight weeks. Complete healing on all-around incisions may exceed four weeks, with visible scars improving over one year. Dr. Sabry can plan follow-up visits to monitor the progress of patients’ recovery and help them heal well.

Body Lift Candidates

Patients who have lost a lot of weight or those with hanging skin due to age, genetics, or multiple pregnancies may find a body lift very useful. However, there are some conditions that must be met by the patient so that the outcomes of this body contouring procedure are optimized:

  • Men and Women with Significant Soft Tissue Looseness: Candidates who have excess skin and soft tissue laxity in multiple areas, such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or flanks, are typically ideal candidates. A body lift can tighten and shape these areas for a smoother, firmer appearance.
  • Healthy Individuals Without Medical Conditions: Patients should be in good overall health and free of such conditions as uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease, which can impact healing or heighten surgical risks.
  • Non-Smokers: Smoking slows down the healing process and increases the risk of complications. Ideal candidates are non-smokers or have stopped smoking well before surgery.
  • Positive Outlook and Realistic Goals: Patients should be mentally stable, aware of what the procedure can accomplish, and hold realistic expectations of the final outcome.
  • Committed to a Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a stable weight through diet and exercise is essential for long-lasting results after removing excess skin. Massive weight loss or gain can significantly impact the final outcomes.
