What Is Rhinoplasty?

It involves making incisions to access the bones and cartilage that support the nose and then sculpting or removing tissue to achieve the desired appearance. Such refinement can be done in any part of the nose to remove a hump, refine the tip, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. It is also performed to correct functional deformities that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

General Anesthesia

Incisions

Incisions are made inside the nostrils and at the base of the nose between the nostrils to access the underlying cartilage and bone. The skin is lifted to expose the framework.

Recovery After
Rhinoplasty Surgery

The recovery period varies, but there is usually some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes that peaks 3 days after surgery. This discomfort gradually reduces over the next couple of weeks. Pain is generally mild and managed with medication.

Sleeping with the head elevated on a few pillows is recommended to minimize swelling. Cold compresses can also help to reduce discomfort in the first few days. The cast and splints are removed after one week, but the nose will remain swollen while the final shape is established.

Most people can return to normal daily activities after 2 weeks, although it may take up to a year for the nose to fully settle.
