What Is Post-Bariatric Body Contouring?
Post-bariatric body contouring is a set of surgical procedures designed to remove excess, hanging skin and help reshape your body after you’ve lost a significant amount of weight. Once skin has been stretched out for years, it usually loses its elasticity and simply can’t snap back, no matter how much you exercise or how healthy your habits become.
These surgeries aren’t for losing more weight. They’re about getting rid of the loose skin and residual fat that can rub and cause rashes, make it hard to find clothes that fit comfortably, limit your movement, and affect how confident you feel in your own body. The result? You finally get to enjoy the slimmer, healthier you that all your hard work has earned.

Does Insurance Cover Post-Bariatric Body Contouring?
If you are considering breast reduction surgery to relieve physical discomfort, a portion of the procedure may be covered by insurance when it is deemed medically necessary. Many insurance providers offer coverage for breast reduction when patients experience chronic symptoms such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin irritation beneath the breasts, or limitations in physical activity caused by excessively large breasts. It is important to review the specific requirements and coverage details of your individual policy with your insurance carrier. Our office can help guide you through the process of verifying your benefits and determining whether your breast reduction may qualify for coverage.
What Procedures Are Included in Post-Bariatric Body Contouring?
Every post-weight-loss contouring plan is tailored specifically to your body, skin condition, and personal goals. Dr. Sabry might recommend one procedure or a combination, often staged over time, for the safest and most effective results.
Here are the options most commonly considered:
- Panniculectomy: Removes the hanging apron of skin and fat from the lower abdomen that can cause rashes, infections, and daily discomfort. With this surgery, the belly button is not relocated, and the upper abdomen remains more or less the same. This is the only part that may be covered by insurance
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): Tightens separated abdominal muscles while excising excess skin for a flatter, stronger midsection. The belly button is repositioned, allowing more skin removal and contouring.
- Belt Lipectomy (Lower Body Lift): Circles the entire lower torso to lift and tighten the abdomen, hips, lower back, and buttocks in one comprehensive procedure.
- Arm Lift (Brachioplasty): Excises loose skin from the upper arms (“bat wings”) to restore a toned, proportionate arm contour.
- Breast Lift with or without Implants: Repositions sagging breasts to a more youthful height; implants or fat grafts can be added if more volume is desired.
- Thigh Lift: Targets excess skin on the inner or outer thighs to improve leg shape, reduce chafing, and make movement more comfortable.
- Liposuction: Used selectively to fine-tune contours and smooth transitions between treated areas when pockets of stubborn fat remain.
- Facelift and Neck Lift: Restores firmness to the face and neck when weight loss has led to sagging there, helping the face match the newly contoured body.
Staging procedures when multiple areas are involved allows for safer recovery and better overall results. During your consultation, Dr. Sabry will examine your skin’s elasticity and listen carefully to your priorities, then map out a realistic plan that follows the right timing, which fits your life and delivers the most natural-looking outcome.
What Are the Common Areas Addressed After Weight Loss?
Every patient’s needs are different, depending on where weight loss occurred and how the skin responded. Post-bariatric surgery may address one or multiple areas, including:
Why Choose Murray Hill Plastic Surgery for Post-Bariatric Body Contouring?
At Murray Hill Plastic Surgery, everything we do starts with the patient: your safety, your day-to-day comfort, and results that look and feel completely natural.
Dr. M. Zakir Sabry brings an unusual depth of training to these cases. He completed more than nine years of rigorous surgical education, which includes a full general surgery residency, a plastic surgery residency, and an additional craniofacial surgery fellowship. He currently teaches and trains residents as an Assistant Professor at New York Medical College and has personally performed well over 1,000 aesthetic procedures. That background gives him the skill and confidence to handle the complex anatomy and larger-scale reshaping involved in post-bariatric surgery with precision and thoughtful restraint.
We never rush patients into the operating room or push unnecessary procedures. If surgery isn’t the right step yet, or if breaking the plan into stages will give you a safer recovery and better outcome, we’ll tell you straight. From your first consultation all the way through recovery, you’ll work directly with Dr. Sabry and a small, dedicated team that’s truly focused on making the process as smooth and supportive as possible.
What Is Dr. Sabry’s Approach to Post-Bariatric Body Contouring?
Dr. M. Zakir Sabry is an absolute master of post-weight-loss body contouring. For him, it is a thoughtful and intuitive process. Every patient who has lost a significant amount of weight arrives with a unique combination of skin laxity, remaining fat distribution, muscle tone, and overall anatomy. What works beautifully for one person might not be right for another.
He starts by taking a close look at your current health, how stable your weight has been, the degree of loose skin, and, most importantly, what you hope to achieve in terms of comfort, appearance, and daily function. Only then does he map out a plan that removes the excess skin and tissue and contours the body safely while maintaining natural proportions, core strength, and long-term stability.
His approach is deliberately conservative: he removes exactly what needs to go and tightens only as much as your tissues can comfortably handle, avoiding the risks of over-pulling or poor healing. This measured philosophy comes directly from his extensive training in reconstructive and craniofacial surgery, which gives him a deep understanding of how to work with larger areas and deeper layers while prioritizing safety and durable, natural-looking results.
What to Expect During Your Post-Bariatric Consultation?
You’ll meet directly with Dr. Sabry for your consultation, never a coordinator or assistant. These visits are relaxed, unhurried, and designed to help you understand your options clearly.
During your consultation, we will:
- Review your weight-loss journey and medical history
- Discuss areas of concern and functional limitations
- Evaluate skin quality and tissue laxity
- Determine which procedures may be appropriate and in what sequence
- Review realistic expectations, recovery, and timing
It’s common for Dr. Sabry to see post-bariatric patients more than once before surgery to ensure the plan is safe, realistic, and aligned with your goals.
What Happens During Post-Weight Loss Surgery Day?
Post-bariatric procedures are performed in our QUAD-A accredited operating room, located within the premises. On the day of surgery, you’ll arrive early to meet with anesthesia staff and review final details with Dr. Sabry.
Depending on the procedures involved, surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Afterward, you’ll recover under the supervision of an experienced PACU nurse and be discharged with an escort once stable and comfortable. If you are travelling from out of town, you’ll have to remain in a nearby hotel for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours.
For larger or staged procedures, recovery planning and postoperative care are discussed in detail ahead of time.
What Is the Recovery After Post-Bariatric Surgery?
Recovery varies based on the number of areas treated and the extent of surgery. Swelling, bruising, and temporary discomfort are expected and improve gradually with time.
Patients can expect:
- Close postoperative monitoring
- A personal call from Dr. Sabry the evening of surgery
- Follow-up contact from our team the next day
- Regular in-office visits to track healing and results
Most patients return to light activities within a few days to weeks, with more strenuous activity added in gradually based on healing progress.

Frequently Asked Questions: Post-Bariatric Body Contouring in NYC
Am I a good candidate for post-bariatric body contouring?
Most people who do well with these procedures have reached a stable weight after their major loss and are dealing with loose skin and malpositioned fat that causes chafing, rashes, hygiene troubles, or limits what they can comfortably wear or do. The surest way to know if you’re ready is to come in for a consultation. It’s here that Dr. Sabry can assess your overall condition and give you an honest opinion.
Do I need to be at my final goal weight before surgery?
Yes, stability is key. You’ll want to be at a steady weight (no big ups or downs) for at least a few months beforehand. If you’re still actively losing, waiting a bit longer usually leads to better, longer-lasting results.
Can multiple areas be treated in one surgery?
Sometimes we can safely combine procedures (like abdominoplasty with a lower body lift) if you’re in good health and the total operating time stays reasonable. In other cases, staging surgeries a few months apart is safer and gives each area a better chance to heal properly. Dr. Sabry will go over what makes the most sense for your body during your visit.
Will the scars be very noticeable?
Scars are part of the process, but Dr. Sabry places them in natural creases or along areas usually covered by clothing or underwear whenever possible. They tend to start pink or red and gradually fade to thin, pale lines over the first year or two, and most patients find they become much less obvious with time and good scar care.
Is the surgery very painful?
Most patients describe it as manageable discomfort rather than sharp pain. We use long-acting local anesthetics for nerve blocks during surgery and use mostly non-narcotic medications after surgery, thereby causing less nausea and helping with early movement and faster recovery. The team stays in close touch during the early days to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.
How long do the results last?
As long as you maintain a relatively stable weight and keep up healthy habits, the improvements are designed to last for many years. The excess skin that’s removed is gone for good, and the tighter contours hold up well over time.
