What Is Breast Implant Removal?

Also known as explant surgery, breast implant removal is a plastic surgery procedure in which your surgeon extracts one or both breast implants. In some cases, the surrounding scar tissue, also known as the capsule, must also be removed, and the surgeon must reshape the breasts.

Breast implant removal is frequently paired with breast lift surgery to reshape and balance the breasts after removing implants and other tissues. If extra volume is desired, Dr. Sabry will perform fat grafting at the same time. A breast lift can also raise the nipples and reshape the areolas into a more desirable shape and size.

Rather than applying a single solution to everyone, Dr. Sabry carefully evaluates each patient to determine which approach will best meet their needs. He will work with you to decide the final look you want to achieve and map out your best possible options to make it a reality.

Does Insurance Cover Breast Explant Surgery?

If you are seeking breast implant removal due to medical reasons or concerns with implant integrity, a portion of the cost of implant removal surgery may be covered by insurance. Insurance will not cover the cost of a breast lift or implant replacement. It is important to verify the specific coverage of your policy with your insurance carrier.

Our office will guide you through the steps to check for insurance eligibility. Please be mindful that Dr. Sabry is an out-of-network provider and surgery requires pre-authorization.

What Is Dr. Sabry’s Approach to Breast Explant Surgery in NYC?

Dr. Sabry approaches breast implant removal with the same principles that guide his surgical care: precision, restraint, and respect for the individual patient.

His goal is not simply to remove implants, but to leave the breast in the healthiest, most natural state possible. When appropriate, he performs capsulectomy to address problematic scar tissue. When reshaping is needed, he incorporates breast lift techniques that focus on internal support rather than aggressive skin tightening. If additional volume is desired, fat grafting is performed at the same time.

Every surgical plan is customized. If a procedure is not likely to improve your outcome, Dr. Sabry will say so openly.

Reasons Patients Consider Breast Explant Surgery

Patients seek breast implant removal for many different reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Physical discomfort or tightness
  • Capsular contracture or implant malposition
  • Implant rupture or aging implants
  • Changes in lifestyle or aesthetic preference
  • Desire for a more natural breast appearance
  • Concerns related to prior breast surgery results

During your consultation, we take time to understand why you want your implants removed and whether additional procedures, such as a lift, would be beneficial.

Should I Consider A Breast Implant Removal With Or Without A Lift?

A breast lift performed at the same time as explant surgery can:

Not every patient requires a breast lift after implant removal, but many benefit from it. When implants are removed, the skin and tissue that were stretched to accommodate volume may not fully retract on their own. Dr. Sabry does not automatically recommend a lift. Instead, he evaluates your anatomy, skin quality, and goals to determine whether implant removal alone or explant with lift will give you the best outcome. If you desire additional volume, he may perform fat grafting at the same time.

  • Improve breast shape and position
  • Remove excess skin
  • Reposition the nipple-areola complex
  • Restore a firmer, more balanced contour

Why Choose Murray Hill Plastic Surgery For Breast Explant Surgery?

At Murray Hill Plastic Surgery, we believe that implant removal surgery should be guided by sound judgment, not trends or societal pressure.

Dr. M. Zakir Sabry brings more than nine years of advanced surgical training to your care, including full general surgery training, plastic surgery residency, and a craniofacial surgery fellowship. He is an Assistant Professor at New York Medical College and has extensive experience with both primary and revision breast surgery.

We do not upsell procedures or push surgery when it isn’t necessary. Our philosophy is conservative and patient first: do what is needed, do it well, and avoid what isn’t beneficial. Our follow-up care is personal and attentive, and patients appreciate that they can reach us when questions arise.

Breast Implant Removal Surgery Day

Breast implant removal is typically performed under general anesthesia in our in-office QUAD-A accredited operating room.

You will arrive approximately 90 minutes before surgery. Our team and anesthesia staff will review essential details to ensure comfort and safety. After surgery, you will recover in our office under the supervision of a PACU nurse until you are fully awake and cleared for discharge with an escort. Printed post-operative instructions are reviewed carefully before you go home.

Recovery After Breast Implant Removal

Recovery after breast implant removal varies depending on whether implant removal and breast lift surgery are done concurrently or if you only opted for a removal.

Most patients experience soreness, swelling, and tightness during the first few days, which is typically well controlled with oral medication. Dr. Sabry uses a special protocol of pain medication that does not include narcotics. Patients undergoing explant with lift may require additional healing time due to incision patterns and tissue reshaping.

Many patients return to non-physical work within 1 week. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity and lifting anything heavy for a few weeks. Dr. Sabry and our team follow patients closely throughout recovery, with scheduled visits to monitor healing and address concerns.

NYC Breast Implant Removal FAQs

Can Dr. Sabry remove implants that were placed by another surgeon?

Yes. Dr. Sabry frequently treats patients who had their implants placed elsewhere. Revision and explant procedures make up a meaningful part of his practice, and he regularly helps patients address concerns related to prior breast surgeries.

The appearance of the breasts after explant surgery depends on your natural breast tissue, skin quality, and how long the implants have been in place. Some patients are comfortable with implant removal alone, while others choose to combine explant surgery with a breast lift to improve shape and positioning.

No. Capsule removal is not automatically required. Dr. Sabry will carefully evaluate the condition of the scar tissue surrounding the implant and recommend capsulectomy only when it is medically indicated or necessary to achieve a healthy, balanced result.

Once implants are removed, they are permanently gone. When Dr. Sabry combines implant removal with a breast lift, results tend to be long-lasting, particularly when weight remains stable and normal aging changes are taken into account.

Yes. In many cases, implant removal and a breast lift can be safely performed during the same procedure. Combining the two allows Dr. Sabry to remove the implants while also reshaping and lifting the breast for a more natural contour.

You may be a good candidate if you’re experiencing discomfort, implant-related complications, or simply feel that implants no longer suit your body or lifestyle. During your consultation, Dr. Sabry takes time to understand both the physical and personal reasons behind your decision before recommending surgery.

For many patients, yes. Symptoms, such as tightness or pressure, are often related to the implant itself or the surrounding scar tissue. Once the implant is removed, and the capsule is addressed when necessary, many patients report noticeable improvement in comfort.

Scar tissue, also called the capsule, is evaluated carefully during surgery. In some cases, it can be left in place safely. In others, partial or complete removal may be recommended. Dr. Sabry’s approach is measured and individualized rather than routine or aggressive.

This can happen with any breast surgery. That said, most patients don’t experience noticeable changes in nipple sensation. Dr. Sabry’s methods preserve blood supply and nerve pathways whenever possible.

Most patients take about a week away from work if their job is not physically demanding. If implant removal is combined with a breast lift, recovery may take a bit longer. Dr. Sabry will give you clear guidance based on your specific surgical plan.

Yes. Implant removal (especially when combined with a lift) can be used to improve asymmetry related to implant position, capsular issues, or natural breast differences. This is discussed carefully during your consultation.

That’s completely fine. Dr. Sabry does not rush patients into surgery. Your consultation is a chance to learn more, see what your best options are, and be better prepared for future surgery down the road if you decide to later.

As with all breast tissue, natural aging and gravity continue over time. However, implant removal can provide a more stable, natural baseline moving forward.
